- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to identify the differences between the two groups through genre analysis on the articles of dissertation acknowledgements that appeared in the thesis of Chinese and Koreans. To this end, research was conducted on master’s and doctoral thesis altogether 80 related to Korean language education. Specifically, the composition patterns of the two groups’ dissertation acknowledgements were examined, and the ‘moves’ measures and ‘steps’ composition of each text were analyzed. Besides, we looked at the differences in the rhetorical structure. According to the analysis results, there was no significant difference overall in the text composition patterns of the two groups, and similar results were also shown in the appearance of move nodes and steps. However, at the level of the steps, there was a significant difference in the frequency of ‘reflecting’ and ‘providing resources and helping technical support’ as the Chinese’s international student status was reflected. Also, at the step of ‘Blessing’, both groups were able to confirm the common cultural perception of the Eastern world by composing texts with forward-looking speech actions, and it is also known that Koreans list in detail the objects to express their appreciation compared to Chinese. This study is meaningful in that it examines differences in writing between Chinese and Koreans, targeting the writings of dissertation acknowledgements that have not been well handled so far.
