계열 관계에 기반한 용언 활용 기술과 규칙성

Abstract

지금까지 용언 활용의 규칙성은 주로 어간과 어미의 결합 과정에서 나타나는 교체 양상의 규칙성을 뜻하는 것으로 받아들여져 왔다. 하지만 구체적인 활용형과 패러다임을 중심으로 한 계열 관계 측면의 기술에서는 활용 부류 및 활용형에 대한 화·청자의 ‘예측 가능성’을 나타내는 개념으로 이해할 수 있다. 용언 활용에 있어서 규칙성은 본질적으로 정도성(程度性)을 내재하는데, 개체 및 집합에 대한 예측 가능성 및 불확정성을 측정하는 지표인 ‘엔트로피’(entropy)를 활용하여 현대 한국어 활용 부류에 대한 예측 엔트로피를 산출하면 규칙성이 그 정도에 따라 이루는 연속체를 확인할 수 있다. 본고에서는 이를 바탕으로 하여 패러다임 간 유추에 의한 재구조화로 다루어져 온 몇몇 현상들에 대해 ‘더 낮은 엔트로피를 가지는 활용 부류로의 변화’, 즉 ‘더 규칙적인 활용 체계를 지향하는 방향으로의 변화’라는 경향성이 존재함을 확인하였다.

Regularity of verb conjugation has been treated as regularity of alternation in the combining process between stem and ending. In terms of paradigmatic relations, however, it can be understood as ‘predictiveness’ of the speaker and the hearer about the conjugation class and the conjugated form. Concept of regularity has a matter of degree in nature. When ‘entropy’ which is an index that measures the predictiveness and uncertainty of entities and sets is used to calculate predictiveness for contemporary Korean conjugation class, the continuum of the degree of regularity can be confirmed. In this study, we investigate several paradigm change phenomena which have been treated as restructuring by analogy cross the paradigms and confirm that there is a tendency of ‘changes to a conjugation class with lower entropy’, that is, ‘changes toward a more regular conjugation system’.
