혼성어 형성에 대한 인지적 고찰

Abstract

이 글은 한국어 신어의 상당수를 차지하고 있는 혼성어의 형성 과정에서 나타나는 여러 가지 현상들을 ‘음절 수 유지’라는 한 경향의 측면에서 설명하였다. 그리고 이로부터 혼성어의 형성이 자의적이고 불규칙적으로 이루어지지 않으며 오히려 인간의 인지적 속성을 반영해 주는 과정임을 밝히는 데에 연구의 목적을 두었다. 혼성어가 형성될 때 수반되는 절단 및 결합 과정으로부터 여러 가지 독특한 현상이 발견되는데 이들은 인간의 기억 양상 및 어휘부에 표상하고 있는 어휘적 정보와 밀접한 관련을 맺는다. 따라서 혼성어는 문법 내적으로 정의된 기존의 단어 체계 내에 위치하기 어려우며, 그보다는 화자가 혼성어를 만들어 사용하는 요인 또는 목적에 주목할 필요가 있다. 이러한 관점에서 이 글은 혼성어의 형성을 의미 해석성, 언어 경제성, 단어성 모두를 일정 정도씩 동시에 취함으로써 화자의 표현론적 동기를 충족시켜 주는 과정으로 보았다.

The purpose of this paper is to present that the formation of blends is the process reflecting cognitive properties of human being, rather than acheived arbitrarily and irregularly. In this respect, this paper explains several phenomena observed in the process of the formation of blends in terms of the tendency of maintaining the number of syllables. These phenomena are closely related to aspects of memory and the lexical information in human lexicon. Therefore, it is hard to define the status of blends in word-formation system. Rather, it is worthwhile to concentrate on the factors or purposes of forming and using blends. In this regard, this paper figures out that the formation of blends is the process satisfying three onomasiological motive: meaning interpretability, language economy, and wordhood.
