This paper argues that the research purpose, research method, and scale of the corpus in some of the early works in the field of Korean hedge expressions need to be reclaimed. It analyzes research trends in Korean hedge expressions and suggests further research directions for teaching Korean as a foreign language. For this purpose, 70 references on Korean hedge expressions since the year 2000 were collected using three techniques: an online bibliographic database search, the ancestry approach, and the descendancy approach. They were then analyzed through systematic review and the references were classified into nine academic categories according to the research purpose. The type, research method, and scale of the corpus used in each reference category were reviewed. The authors provide an overview of the existing research results, for each category and identify the problems encountered in existing references. Simultaneously, the authors highlight four issues to enable future researchers to avoid certain mistakes and make improvements in their approach.
