The purpose of this study is to propose a new definition sentence of sentence-closing ending -deonde(yo) that is more explanatory for actual usage in order to provide basic data for accurate dictionary processing of -deonde(yo). For this purpose, this study reviewed the definition sentence of -deonde(yo) appearing in Yonsei Korean Dictionary, Standard Korean Dictionary, and Korea University Korean Dictionary, and inspected the overall distribution and usage of -deonde(yo) using New Yonsei Corpus 4. This study confirmed that the definition sentence of -deonde(yo) provided by existing Korean dictionaries is not satisfactory, and explained the detailed semantic function of -deonde(yo) as [simple delivery of additional information(past)] and [delivery of additional information(past) with expression of doubt]. This method of classifying semantic functions makes it possible to explain comprehensively the various usage patterns according to the context of the sentence-closing ending -deonde(yo) presented in previous studies. This study is meaningful in that it empirically verified the function and distribution of -deonde(yo) using a large-scale standard corpus. Through this process, this study examined the meaning and syntactic characteristics of the sentence-closing ending -deonde(yo), which is distinct from the conective ending -deonde, and proposed a new definition sentence of the sentence-closing ending -deonde(yo) that can be immediately applied to the Korean dictionary.
