Expanding the Organizational Roles of Social Enterprises: Focusing on Empowered Actorhood and Institutional Logic

초록

The purpose of this study is to empirically analyze the factors driving the expansion of the roles of social enterprises in Korea. As an alternative to the growing wicked problem, interest in social enterprises has increased, along with the responsibilities and challenges they demand. Therefore, this study focused on expanding the roles of social enterprises whileattempting to capture the influence of internal and external factors. In particular, it applies the concept of empowered actorhood, which is actively discussed in institutional institutionalism, to Korean social enterprises in order to explain the behavior of organizations in response to the flow of changes in institutional logic. The results showed that increased actors became a leading factor in expanding the roles of firms. In addition, it was found that companies that pursue social value and economic value are trying to expand their roles. This study can suggest the theoretical significance of newly defining the concept of actors for application to social enterprises. In addition, the study has the practical implications that social enterprises should set goals that conform to internal capabilities and conditions rather than excessive targets set in the context of asymmetrical information, as well as the need to design policies that enable enterprises to expand their roles and establish a system for identifying the status of social enterprises.
