A Critique on the Modern Viewers’ Prejudicial Thinking in "Fabricated City"
<조작된 도시>의 현대 사회 속 편견에 대한 비평

초록

This paper examines the use of the game framework and the reversal of the viewers’ prejudice against facial disfiguration in Fabricated City to argue that these elements all serve to reinforce the effectiveness of its mystery plot and reveal the way in which our perception of others is easily swayed. The paper also asserts that the film works as a warning against people’s over-reliance on science by showing the fallibility of what is considered ‘objective’ and ‘reasonable.’ In this paper, the gamic elements of the film are interpreted as the director’s invitation to the viewers to actively participate in the game-like process of searching for and getting rid of the villain. Next, the effect of the viewers’ self-restraint against the formation of prejudice regarding the facial disfiguration of the villain, Mr. Min, is examined. Lastly, it considers the many different elements in the film which point to the common message of our modern society’s excessive reliance on science and technology.
