The purpose of this study is to inductively examine the research trends of Korean language education as a foreign language in South and North Korea. For this purpose, North Korean research was collected from three representative Korean language-related academic journals, and South Korean research was collected through keyword search. As a result, a total of 55 research articles were analyzed for research trends by period and subject. And it can be seen that research is being actively conducted in North Korea toward 2019. In South Korea, the number of studies has been steadily increasing as time goes by, but due to difficulties in data collection, research has not been conducted as actively as in North Korea. In the thematic analysis, most studies were conducted in the area of analyzing textbooks and examining the current status of textbooks in South Korea, and the research on ‘error analysis’ was not conducted due to difficulties in data collection. In North Korea, the most research was conducted in the field of ‘contents of Korean language education’, but there was no study on the analysis of textbooks. As such, this study is meaningful in that it can be used as a basic data for the integration of Korean language education after unification by identifying the gap between the two language educations by examining the study of Korean language education in a synchronic and diachronic.
