- Abstract
- This study explores the online home-based exercise experience of the elderly in the COVID-19 situation, to seek improvements by analyzing the effects and limiting factors of the existing online home-based exercise, and then to provide implications for the development of a new online home-based exercise program. With the online home-based exercise experience of the elderly as the research subject, this study examines the actual experiences of the study participants through individual in-depth interviews as a phenomenological method among qualitative research methods. The study participants' motivation to participate in online home-based exercise for the elderly is voluntary and due to exercise restrictions and concerns about health due to COVID-19. And their necessity to participate in the online home-based exercise affects their intention and persistence to use the online home-based exercise program. As a result of the study, it was found that the study participants prefer quiet and easy-to-follow exercises because they exercise at home, and they also prefer stretching, body-weight exercise, and anaerobic strength exercise. Among online exercise programs, YouTube is mostly used as an online home-based exercise program for the elderly. It is especially noticeable that this study found out the research participants' strong intention to continue their online home training exercise methods, which were originally chosen as an alternative way of exercise, available at home because of many exercise restrictions due to COVID-19. They show their intention to continue their online home-based exercise, without stopping it even if COVID-19 pandemic ends up and going out is free in the future.
