- Abstract
- This paper aims to propose that the meaning of these two morpheme combinations should be looked at from the perspective of the language user's intentions rather than interpreting the combined form of `-eoseo' and `-eoss-' as a grammatical error. Using practical examples extracted from a web based corpus, this paper discovered three meanings. Firstly, the event of the preceding phrase and that of the subsequent phrase show a clear temporal distinction. Secondly, it plays a role of relaxing the closeness between the preceding and the subsequent clause. Third, it creates a psychological distance between the preceding and the subsequent clause. In this paper, using corpus data, we analyzed how `-eosseoseo' appears in the area of discourse, and we found that `-eosseoseo' is used under a set of unique conditions distinct from those of `-eoseo'. This is significant in that it empirically explains that the combination of `-eoss-' and `-eoseo', which till now have been considered errors in existing grammar, is acceptable to the intuition of speech. In particular, it is worth noting that `- eosseoseo' is a language phenomenon whose use is on the rise, and that semantic and pragmatic demands have effected this change in grammar.
